RIP TIDE is well written and well paced, and the simplicity of its language betrays the complexity of its ideas. While the futuristic bits are fun and clever, the real power here is in the way Falls examines corruption of authority, oppression of the masses, and issues such as prejudice, poverty and stereotyping. Not only is this an entertaining adventure and a worthy sequel, it is a thought-provoking tale about power, determination, family and friendship.

This novel is reminiscent of H.G. Wells’s The Island Of Dr. Moreau with a hint of Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park. The inhuman world that author Falls has shaped is both disturbing and fascinating. Falls’s creatures are frighteningly beautiful as are the traits that distinguish them from human and animal, a very small distinction at times. This is recommended for readers looking for a thrilling, page-turning read.

Novelist Kat Falls writes sci-fi thrillers for young people.
In Dark Life (Scholastic Press) and its sequel, Riptide, Kat takes middle grade readers on an action-packed adventure under the sea. The series was featured on The Today Show, has been translated into 18 languages, and is in development for film at Disney.
Kat’s young adult novel, Inhuman, and its sequel, Undaunted, are set after the outbreak of a mutagenic virus that turns people into beast-men. Inhuman received glowing reviews from Publishers Weekly, School Library Journal, VOYA, a starred review from Kirkus, and was featured on the Tome It List for "clean" teen reads.
Kat loves to share her joy of books and writing with audiences of all ages and has presented at writing conferences across the U.S. and in Mexico. She also leads writing workshops and speaks at schools and libraries and enjoys skyping with tween and teen book clubs.
Kat grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, holds a BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MFA from Northwestern University, where she now teaches. She lives in Evanston, Illinois with her husband, theater director Robert Falls, two dogs, and a very old cat. Her three children are now young adults, though still very influential in her creative process.
